Magee Elementary Students Get Their Hands Dirty in New Garden
Sitting in the middle of campus, for all to see, grows a cute little garden planted by students at Magee Elementary School.
Consisting of a trellis and two troughs, the garden is tended by teacher Carol Marshall and a group of her students. Together, they harvested their first crops, which included sweet potatoes and peanuts.
Marshall said that the garden – created for students from kindergarten to second grade – originated in an effort to expose her students to the stages of plant growth.
“I thought about how our kindergartners put plants in a cup and talk about the stem, the leaves and the roots; but they never see the fruit of it,” said Marshall. “So, I decided that we needed to have a garden, so these children can see how this stuff grows.”
For the garden, Marshall was given the idea to grow sweet potatoes and peanuts to complement the curriculum on root vegetables. As the students visit the garden, she often quizzes them on whether the plants grow on top of or beneath the ground.
“The children have been really excited about the garden and digging up the potatoes and peanuts. It has been a great experience for them.”
For next year, Marshall said she has big ideas for the garden and hopes to make it even better by adding other vegetables like squash, zucchinis, and cucumbers. She also wants to give students the opportunity to taste-test the vegetables that they grow.
The K-2 garden was made possible through donations and discounts provided by Angela’s, Dollar General, Maddox Fruit Stand, Magee Coop, Magee Tractor Supply, Peoples Bank, Petal and Blooms, PriorityOne Bank, Trustmark Bank, and Walmart.
