I am Lane Steele, the incumbent Alderman for Ward 3. It has been my privilege and an honor to serve as your Alderman. Today, I am announcing that I will seek re-election for this position, and I humbly ask for your support towards this goal.
I am a long time resident of Magee, a Christian of Baptist faith, a successful business man, a volunteer firefighter and the proud son of Nadine and the late Jerry Steele. I began serving as a volunteer on our fire department in 1984 and progressed up through the ranks. In 2002, I was elected to my current position as Fire Chief by the department members. I began my service as an Alderman in 1997 and have faithfully attended every regular scheduled meeting since being elected. I am currently serving on the budget/finance committee.
Some of our great accomplishments as a City have occurred under my tenure: the building and several expansions of the sports complex – including a splash pad for children; the creation of a walking path for families at the old YMCA property; the adoption of a comprehensive plan and zoning for continued and orderly growth; the adoption of modern building, fire, life safety, and property maintenance codes; expansion of the business community and numerous new building projects; the creation of industrial parks, office parks, and a medical district; an improved fire insurance rating (class 6); a highly trained and better equipped fire department with an excellent record of service to the City; an excellent police force with the recent designation of being the 6th safest city in Mississippi; numerous infrastructure projects including road, water, sewer, and airport renovations or improvements; storm management – preparedness, response, clean up, and successful rebuilding after the disasters of Hurricane Katrina and the tornado strike of 2009. All of the above examples were accomplished with sound fiscal responsibility and managed on a lean budget without increased taxes.
But our job is not finished. With your continued support, my elected colleagues and I will continue to lead our great City forward with responsible leadership for future quality growth, improvements and expansions. Some projects and goals are: the continued improvements to public safety – the assurance of adequate staffing, equipment, technology and training necessary for both the fire and police departments; ensure that we are staying current with building, fire, and life safety codes and the continued mission of a short term fire insurance rating improvement to a class 5 and a future improvement to a class 4. This translates to huge insurance premium reductions and will make Magee a magnet for businesses both large and small; continue to focus on the family in our parks and recreation; continue on infrastructure improvements (roads, water, and sewer) in order to meet the increasing demands of a growing city.
New people will occupy the positions of Mayor, and Alderman at large this election. As this transfer of leadership occurs, it presents us with new challenges and the process of orientation for our new members. If elected, I will be able to bring experience, back to the board room and help ensure a smooth transition. If you continue to allow me the privilege of serving as your Alderman, I will continue to represent this City in the same professional, honorable, and fiscally responsible way as I have from day one. I will continue to ask for the Lord’s guidance as I conduct the legislative business for the citizens of Magee. I appreciate your support, and I humbly ask for your vote.
Thank You,
Lane Steele
Alderman – Ward 3
