Congratulations to SCA’s Katie Rogers on being nominated and chosen to receive the prestigious award of The Prudential Spirit of Community Award. Katie was one of only two students chosen in the State of Mississippi to receive this award.
The Prudential Spirit of Community Award is given to one high school student and one junior high student in each state. It is an honor to be nominated as well as selected to receive this award.
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is the United States’ largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service.
The program’s goals are to applaud young people who already are making a positive difference in their towns and neighborhoods, and to inspire others to think about how they might contribute to their communities. Over the past 16 years, more than 310,000 young Americans have participated in the program, and nearly 100,000 of them have been officially recognized for their volunteer work.
Katie Rogers is a senior at Simpson County Academy. Katie followed her heart as a young girl when a good friend was diagnosed with cancer. Katie instantly felt the urge to take care of her friend’s needs. “This is what I feel God is calling me to do to honor Him, take care of sick children. I just love to help someone in need.” said Katie.
Katie volunteers at Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital in Jackson, Ms. Katie is assigned to the recreation/activity room bringing as much fun and happiness to the children’s day during their hospital stay. Katie feels her goal is to help the kids forget they are sick.
Katie is also an intern with the American Cancer Society volunteering her time each year bringing toys to sick children in the hospital. Katie says her goal in all her actions is to see kids smile when they are at their lowest.
As State Honorees, Katie Rogers of Collins, along with Shields Harre of Tupelo, will receive $1,000, an engraved medallion, and an all expense trip to Washington, D.C. There they will join the top two honorees from each state for four days of national recognition events. During the trip, ten students will be named America’s Top Youth Volunteer of 2015
Katie is the daughter of Mark and Jamie Rogers of Collins.
