Janice Davies Ammann, Biloxi, MS
Janice Davies Ammann, age 95, of Biloxi went home to be with the Lord on November 15, 2016. Although she wanted to make it to 100, God decided to bring her home a little early. When asked how she lived so long, she would always say it was because she never smoked a cigarette or took a drink of alcohol! She was loved by everyone who met her.
Janice was born on January 1, 1921, in Dayton, KY, and is preceded in death by her parents, Daniel and Mae Davies, her husband of 25 years, Allen Ammann, her twin sister, Patricia States, her brother, Dickie, and grandchild, Jordan Hamel. She is survived by her three children, Alan Ammann of Biloxi, Steven Ammann (Deborah) of Mendenhall, and Maureen Ammann Hamel of Biloxi. She has five grandchildren: Dennis (Sharon) Ammann of Mendenhall, Alison (John) Blanton of Florence, Davis (Renee) Ammann of Seattle, Washington, Shannon (Matthew) Kuhn of Biloxi, Tyler (Shelby) Hamel of Gulfport; six stepgrandchildren: Kathi Landry of Lafayette, LA, Raymond Hamel Jr (Trina), Dawn Curticapian, Cindy Holley (Delmas), Tracy Ladner (Nick), and Conrad Hamel (D.J.), all of Biloxi, and a host of great-grandchildren.
Her children say of their mother: Many women have to choose between staying home with their children or having a career outside the home. Our mom was lucky enough to have the best of both worlds. Coming south to Jackson, MS, from Kentucky with her husband after his discharge from the Army after World War II, she stayed home and raised her children until the youngest was in junior high school. She taught herself how to type and took shorthand through a correspondence course. She began to work for the Mississippi State Bar Association in Jackson, MS. She picked out someone in politics that she admired. She had read an article in LIFE magazine about William F. Winter and really admired his career. At the time, he was State Tax Collector and fought to abolish the position to save the taxpayers money. She was organized, learned names quickly, and made herself an asset to his office. She worked for him for over twenty years, through his rise to Lt. Governor and then Governor. In her 60’s she moved to Washington, D.C. to work for Senator John Stennis. She continued to work for the Mississippi State Senate until she was 82 years old!
Our mother’s greatest regret was that she never was able to attend college. In her high school yearbook in 1939, she was voted Most Likely to Attend College, but her mother died and her father said he could no longer afford to send her. She was broken hearted. From the time we children can remember, she would preach to us about the importance of obtaining a college degree. She made sure all of her children were able to graduate from college. We are all so grateful to her for teaching us to always be kind to one another and to always do the right thing. She said that if we did those two things, everything else in life would fall into place.
Tutor Funeral Home in Mendenhall is handling the arrangements. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, November 18, 2016, with a service at 11 a.m. Burial will be later that day at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Jackson, MS.
The Ammann family would like to extend a special thank you to the staffs at Strong River Assisted Living Center and Simpson General Hospital in Mendenhall for their love and compassion during her final months. Her physician, Dr. Harpal Singh, was so kind to us and took such wonderful care of her at the end of her life…we can never thank him enough.
