Important Special Congressional Election Deadlines
Jackson, Miss.—Due to the unfortunate passing of Congressman Alan Nunnelee, a vacancy exists in the First Congressional District for United States Congress. Governor Bryant has set the date of the special election to fill the vacancy on Tuesday, May 12, 2015. If no candidate receives a majority of the votes cast, a special runoff election will be held Tuesday, June 2, 2015.
“I think it is most important for voters in the First Congressional District to honor the work of Congressman Nunnelee by participating in the upcoming election,” says Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann. “Candidates are encouraged not to wait until the last minute to submit qualifying papers to our Office. By submitting qualifying papers early, candidates may have the opportunity to resolve any last minute issues regarding their petition.”
The candidate qualifying deadline is 5:00 pm, Friday, March 27, 2015. Qualifying papers may be filed at Secretary of State Offices in Jackson, Tupelo and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Hand delivery is not required. However, the petition must be received by the Secretary of State’s Office no later than 5:00 pm, March 27th.
