Anyone who graduated from Magee High School has memories of the Magee-Mendenhall game. The Trojans and Tigers have been rivals for more than 100 years, and this game is always about more than football. It’s about bragging rights!

I love when people share old pictures and stories about this rivalry.

This picture is of the 1950 Magee Trojans. Some Magee football scholars say 1950 was the first year Magee played as the Trojans instead of the Burrheads, according to Bill Caughman, who was a member of this team.

But Joyce Barnes, one of Magee’s best football historians, says the Trojan name began in 1949.

Whatever the year, the Trojans are rolling into Mendenhall Friday night!

I know many of us still wish the Magee-Mendenhall game was the final game of the season. I’m one of them! But the date was changed several years ago, and I’m not sure there’s any going back.

Mendenhall will host the Trojans Friday night at Tiger Field, with kickoff moved up to 6 p.m.

Get ready for great football, great bands and, of course, a little Simpson County bragging rights

This program was just shared with me stating the Trojans “took over” in 1950.
