Heath to Give Black History Month Presentation at PRCC-Forrest County Center
André Heath, assistant to the dean for recruitment, retention, and strategic initiatives in the College of Science and Technology at The University of Southern Mississippi, will be the keynote speaker for the 10th annual observance of Black History Month Thursday, Feb. 4 at Pearl River Community College’s Forrest County Center in Hattiesburg.
Heath’s address, “Not by the Color of Our Skin,” is set for 12:15 p.m. in the Center’s multipurpose room and will be presented by the PRCC-FCC History and Humanities Club.
A native of Crystal Springs, Miss. Heath holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Southern Miss. As an undergraduate he was actively involved on campus in numerous student organizations, including his fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi. After graduation he worked with Pine Belt Mental Healthcare Resources as a case manager before returning to USM in 1999 to serve as an admissions counselor, while also completing a Masters of Education degree in Counseling and College Student Personnel part-time.
In 2003 he was named to his current position in the College of Science and Technology, where for the past 10 years he has advised, mentored and counseled undergraduate and graduate students in their pursuit of graduate school enrollment and job placement. Heath is currently completing a Ph.D. in Human Capital Development at USM.
Heath is often asked to speak statewide to groups and organizations on leadership, personal empowerment, and civic engagement. His energetic speeches, workshops, seminars and lectures get rave reviews. In 2011 Heath became 1 of 82 contestants from a pool of 30,000 participants from 116 countries to advance to the semifinals of Toastmasters World Championship of Public Speaking.
In 2001 the Area Development Partnership selected Heath to its “Leaders for a New Century” class, and in 2012 the Mississippi Business Journal selected Heath to its 2012 Top 40 Under 40 Class.
Heath is the advisor of I.M.A.G.E., the Kappa Iota Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and is president of the alumni chapter. He serves on the ADP Leadership Pinebelt Steering Committee, is Past- President of the Hattiesburg Toastmasters Club and is Prince Hall Mason. He also serves on the Petal, Miss. school board, and in honor of Black History Month, the city of Petal recently recognized him as a trailblazer in the community.
