I love to cut the grass!!
I admit to being a little weird. One of my favorite things to do in spring and summer is to mow the lawn!
The sun feels so good after a long winter, the smell of fresh cut grass and the wild onions brings to mind good memories of a childhood spent outdoors playing from sun up to sun down. I feel a sense of instant gratification from a beautifully cut yard, with no deadlines and no phones. I also enjoy the time to think about life, or as the scripture says, to “ponder” things. Last week as I was cutting the grass, I was thinking about the song we are practicing for Easter, “Face the Cross”. I thought about the promise of spring and all that it brings and thought about what Jesus must have felt as He walked thru Israel during the days leading up to Passover. Did He enjoy the smells? Did He think of the miracles He had performed? Did the sun feel good on His face? Or did He dread what was coming? He knew what was ahead and He knew the purpose, but I wonder if He was asking about another way? Do you wonder if the joy of spring was dampened by the knowledge of the intense suffering He faced? Could He compartmentalize His life and really find joy and laughter in the good times, knowing the terrible way He would die? I don’t know and my questions are not important, but it made me pause and really appreciate the small joys that I encounter each day. The one thing that I do know, He was born to “Face the Cross”. He overcame the pain, sorrow, and torture; and He defeated death! I can enjoy eternal life because He lives and I know that today He is at the right hand of God! A wonderful last thought to remind all of us of the tremendous price that He paid for my sins. I need to do better things and be a better person because He lives!!
