The Mississippi Office of Highway Safety has awarded DREAM, Inc. a grant to work on statewide efforts to reduce youth highway traffic fatalities by reducing impaired driving and increasing seat belt usage. DREAM’s Mississippi Youth Highway Safety Program provides youth presentations on impaired driving and the importance of seat belts and coordinate two statewide youth conferences: Club Officer Training and Teens On the Move.
A survey was taken at Magee and Mendenhall of students wearing seat belts. Magee was 39% post and after a representative spoke with students during the day the survey showed 44% were wearing seat belts when they left campus. Mendenhall High School had a higher percentage rate of students wearing seat belts. These numbers are still very low and awareness needs to be taught.
Simpson County is in the top 25 counties for alcohol and impaired teen fatalities.
As part of State Farm’s support of Developing Resources for Education in America (DREAM), they are hosting a Traffic Safety Speaker Series with speaker Mike Lutzenkirchen at Magee and Mendenhall High School.
Local State Farm Agent, Chuck Cooper, was on hand to introduce Mike Lutzenkirchen.
Father of Phillip Lutzenkirchen, former Auburn student athlete, speaks on behalf of the Lutzie 43 Foundation to carry forward Phillip’s legacy. Phillip lost his life in a single vehicle accident on June 29, 2014.
Mike a native of Wheaton, Illinois, has been married for 30 years to Mary and is father to Amy (28), Ann (27), and Abby (22). Mike is a former two-sport athlete at Coe College (NCAA Division III) playing basketball and baseball. Mike’s career in sales, sales management and marketing included positions with Macmillan Publishing IBM, SpeedTracs and currently Vice President of Sales for Fuel My Club, a mobile app fundraising company.
Mike is currently Executive Director of the Lutzie 43 Foundation, which carries forward Phillip’s legacy through the education of students, student athletes and coaches. The Foundation focuses on leadership, charity compassion, mentorship, hard work, honesty and faith. Mike has spoken across the U.S. delivering more than 150 “Phillip’s Legacy….what legacy are you leaving?” talks.
