High School Students Flex Their Intellectual Muscles!

  • 20 teams from 18 schools from throughout Mississippi competed in a fun and free way to flex their intellectual muscle and test their economic knowledge earlier this week at Millsaps College in Jackson, MS

  • The Economics Challenge, in its 13th year and made possible by BankPlus, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi, State Farm, Millsaps College, and Security Ballew, Inc., the Council for Economic Education, and delivered by the Mississippi Council on Economic Education, challenged high school students to complete rounds of testing, work in teams to solve case problems, and participate in a quick-paced oral quiz-bowl in order to compete for the title of State Champions

JACKSON, Miss., April 14, 2016— The Mississippi Council on Economic Education (MCEE) applied the excitement of an athletic competition to academic excellence and encouraged students to apply their economics knowledge and work in teams at the State Economics Challenge earlier this month at Millsaps College in Jackson, MS. Qualifying rounds of the competition are held three times during the school year at the school level via online testing. In each competition, teams of students answer rigorous questions on microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics, and current events. Top scoring teams from the online challenge advance to the State Challenge, where students complete rounds of testing, work in teams to solve case problems, and participate in a quick-paced oral quiz-bowl in order to compete for the title of State Champions.

This year, Mendenhall High School was one of 20 teams from around the state of Mississippi invited to compete in a fun and free way to flex their intellectual muscle and test their economic knowledge.  In the attached photo are the following:

“The Mississippi Council on Economic Education provides teachers with professional development in economics and financial literacy education that enables them to teach skills the students need for success. Economic literacy is a college and career ready skill taught in all Mississippi high schools. 17 out of the 20 teams qualifying for the State Challenge this year were taught by Master Teachers of Economics, an endorsement established by the Mississippi Board of Education. As teachers’ skills improve in teaching these complex courses, their students demonstrate greater success in the annual competition,’’ stated Selena Swartzfager, President of the MS Council on Economic Education. The next Master Teacher of Economics program will be held in June at Millsaps College. Economics teachers from around the state are encouraged to attend at no cost to the teacher. More information on the dates and location can be found at https://mscee.org/workshop-signup/#Q2.

The Mississippi Council on Economic Education (MCEE) has a mission to increase economic and financial literacy in Mississippi by providing resources and training to public and private K-12 school teachers, empowering students to create a more prosperous future for themselves and Mississippi. The MCEE’s purpose is to enhance the quality of instruction in economics, entrepreneurship, and personal finance to Mississippi’s K-12 students in ways that are academically sound and nonpartisan.   We train teachers to be proficient in teaching students a demonstrated understanding of economic and financial literacy in order to make informed financial decisions throughout their lives.
