Delmus spent his life, truck farming, raising cattle, and baling hay. Won farmer of the years 1991/1992 there was write ups in the newspapers he was proud of, but they had to bring him the award, he was in the field picking tomatoes and did not have time for the award ceremonial. He operated produce stand at the farmer’s market in Jackson, MS., and also peddled produce out of an old pickup at one time. He loved to see a plant grow more than anyone I have seen. No person in the world loved to grow tomatoes the way he did. He was the hardest worker you have ever seen, could not sit still, had to be doing something all the time. He was the most honest man I have ever met, if he thought he had cheated you, he couldn’t sleep till he made it right, even if it was only a nickel or an ear of corn. He was a fantastic guitar player, loved Chet Atkins, was offered a job as a studio musician, he was that good, but turned it down to farm. If you talked to him about other people, He had a nick name for every person ever met, so you never knew who he was talking about, most of the time he couldn’t even remember their real names, but they were always his friends, I never heard anyone say anything bad about him. Once he carried a cow to a sale for his granddaughter, when he went to pick up her check they ask him whose check he wanted. He told them “ole lady hays” (the name he always had called her) and could not remember her name, his cousin, who was with him, had to tell them her name. A firm believer in the Good Lord, He and family have been members of the Pentecostal church in New Hebron since it existed.
