Crews set beams for new I-20 bridge in Jackson
JACKSON, MISS.—Motorists driving through the Interstate 20 bridge replacement project on Wednesday likely noticed massive concrete beams being placed on the new bridge being constructed between Terry Road and Gallatin Street in Jackson.
Crews completed the placement of all seven beams by nightfall on November 18. The 152-foot concrete beams weigh roughly 182,000 pounds each, depending on length. Crews anticipate placing the remaining concrete beams over the railroad in the coming weeks. The $42.2 million project was awarded to Key, LLC, of Madison.
Work began on the I-20 eastbound bridge replacement project in March and expected to be completed by summer 2022. The bridge spans U.S. Highway 51, Interstate 55 south and Canadian National/Illinois Central Railroad (ICRR). Additional work includes slide repairs, slope stabilization along the ICRR and traffic sensor installations within Hinds and Rankin counties. Crews will also widen the roadway along I-20 eastbound and U.S. 51 north for the new bridge alignment.
The new bridge is being built on a new alignment to keep closures to a minimum during construction. However, crews shut down U.S. Highway 51/State Street in Jackson to minimize traffic hazards and allow space for crews to mobilize cranes and other equipment. Once complete, the existing bridge will be demolished.
