Congressman Guest Joins Lawmakers to Introduce Legislation to Ban Sex-Selection Abortions

Washington, D.C.  – Congressman Michael Guest (MS-03) joined as an original cosponsor as Congresswoman Ann Wagner (MO-02) introduced the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act (PRENDA), legislation that would ban discrimination against the unborn on the basis of sex.

“It’s hard to believe that the United States has no law on the books that bans the destruction of preborn life on the basis of sex,” Rep. Michael Guest said. “Sadly, sex-selection abortions victimize unborn girls, a discriminatory action that should concern all Americans. This legislation would finally ban this terrible act in America and help end the practice that has taken an estimated 117 million lives of unborn girls worldwide.”

“Sex-selection abortions overwhelmingly target girls, and PRENDA would make it a federal crime to perform a sex-selection abortion or force a woman to obtain one,” read a statement from Rep. Ann Wagner. “Outrageously, the United States does not prohibit this horrifying practice, even though an estimated 117 million girls worldwide have lost their lives due to discriminatory abortions, infanticide, and other forms of sex-based violence.  The fight for life has never been more important, and I will never stop fighting for the day when every infant is welcomed with the warmth and love they deserve.

A press release from Rep. Ann Wagner’s office provides additional background on the bill:

“PRENDA would ban discrimination against the unborn on the basis of sex. A sex-selection abortion is an abortion undertaken to eliminate an unborn child based solely on their gender. Sex-selection abortion is an act of sex-based or gender-based violence, predicated on sex discrimination. Sex-selection abortions are not prohibited by U.S. law, and only seven states ban abortions for reason of sex selection at some point in pregnancy. Our children deserve better.  This legislation would make it a federal crime to perform a sex-selection abortion or force a woman to obtain a sex-selection abortion. Women upon whom sex-selection abortions have been performed are given a private right of action to obtain damages, and cannot be criminalized.”

Congressman Michael Guest represents Mississippi’s Third Congressional District. Currently serving his second term, Congressman Guest serves as the Vice Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, as a Member of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, and as a Member of the Committee on Ethics.
