Co-Lin begins work on turf field

WESSON, Mississippi – H.L. Stone Stadium on the campus of Copiah-Lincoln Community College will have a different look come August. At the April meeting, the Co-Lin Board of Trustees approved the lowest and best bid in the amount of $1,239,000 from Sports Contactors Unlimited, LLC of Hattiesburg for a synthetic turf field. In November, the college announced the first capital campaign in its history. Titled ‘Back the Pack,’ the plan communicates a comprehensive, three-phase set of goals that seek to advance the program by fostering student-athlete formation, strengthening competitive excellence, increasing external engagement, and enhancing facilities. Phase 1 includes the renovation of the field from natural grass to synthetic turf and a digital video scoreboard.

“We are extremely grateful to the Board of Trustees for its approval of this incredible enhancement to Stone Stadium,” said Co-Lin President Dr. Jane Hulon. “We are thrilled for our entire student body. Not only does this create a special playing environment for Co-Lin athletics, it will also benefit Wesson Attendance Center whose sports share the college’s facility.”

Co-Lin prides itself on its successful athletic programs. Primary activities to be held on the field include athletic activities, practices, and games not only for Co-Lin, but for Wesson Attendance Center’s high school and junior high football.

“I have been part of Co-Lin for the last 16 years. The upgrades we are getting including the turf project are paramount,” said Co-Lin Athletic Director Bryan Nobile. “This project is just the beginning of new and great things for Co-Lin Athletics. I, like many in the community and on this campus, are excited. The fact that Wesson will still be playing their football games and soccer matches at Stone Stadium, gives us the opportunity to showcase our venue and campus as well.”

To meet the needs of the college and multipurpose use for the field, the college chose to install Shaw Sports Turf’s Legion Pro system with the Brock Powerbase YSR Shock pad. Legion is a combination of high-performance monofilament fibers and a durable slit film fiber. The slit film fiber is a workhorse that will handle the workload, while the monofilament provides a more resilient surface that enhances performance characteristics. Shaw Sports Turf is the Official Turf Partner of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

“We are extremely excited about what we are doing and planning to have in the future at Co-Lin,” said Co-Lin Head Football Coach Glenn Davis. “This is something all of our athletic programs will benefit from. From a football standpoint, it is exciting to have a great place to play our games and a great place to practice in inclement weather. This will be an asset in our recruiting process.”
