CMRLS Libraries Announce Fine Free Library Card
Central Mississippi Regional Library System staff visited local schools last month with a very special friend. That friend was a 6-foot tall, very pink pig named Olivia. Many know her from the books about her antics by Ian Falconer, or by her television show; but the school children across Rankin, Scott, Simpson, and Smith Counties will remember that she brought them news of the new ACORN CARD.
This new library card is named for the 6-foot tall, CMRLS mascot Acorn Squirrel. It is fine free and may be issued to any youth aged 18 years and younger. There are limits with the library card. Youth may check out two books at a time and when those two items are returned two more items may be checked out. The items will have a due date, but no late fees will be assessed. If they wish, parents may sign up for a friendly email reminding them when the books are due, but still no fines!
The fine free ACORN CARD is also available to vulnerable adults. This is anyone who may have challenges that would impair them from providing for their care or behavior without assistance. Adults are also limited to two items, but may check out DVDs, Blu-Ray Discs, and Video Games, as well as books.
“CMRLS is so excited to be able to offer a Fine Free Card to our young patrons and to vulnerable adults,” said Mara Polk, CMRLS Director. “Having a Fine Free Card shows that our Board of Trustees is committed to helping and serving our patrons.”
“But my child has a CMRLS library card and we owe late fees, can he have an ACORN CARD?” one parent asked. The answer? Yes! Bring in the child’s CMRLS Library Card and trade it for a fine free ACORN CARD. Library staff will waive all fines on the old card so that your child can start truly fine free!
The design on the ACORN CARD was chosen by the CMRLS Board of Trustees through an art contest open to anyone with a CMRLS Library Card. More than 100 library card holders entered the contest. The ACORN CARD shows the winning artwork of Ruby Kaura, age 10, the daughter of Rajiv and Asha Kaura.
Central Mississippi Regional Library System (CMRLS) serves the 20 public libraries and more than 216,000 citizens of Rankin, Scott, Simpson, and Smith Counties. For more information contact your local CMRLS library or visit online at cmrls.lib.ms.us.
