Larry Dewitt Warren Obituary
Larry Dewitt “Poppy” Warren, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and uncle, passed away on August 1, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, and unwavering devotion to his family. He was born on May 26, 1948, to Dewitt Mitchell Warren and Louise Warren.
Larry shared a beautiful life with his beloved wife of 53 years, Julie Cook Warren, affectionately known by her family as “Gammie.” Together they built a faith centered and loving home. They raised two daughters, Courtney Warren Stevens and Ashley Warren Jennings. Courtney is married to Andy Stevens and together they have 3 children- Abigail, Liz, and Andrew. Ashley is married to Jeff Jennings, and they have one daughter- Juliana Jennings Rushing, who just recently married Adam. If you knew Poppy, you knew his grandchildren. It didn’t matter whether you were a lifelong friend, a neighbor, or someone he had just met in the checkout line at Walmart—before long, you were hearing about one of his grandchildren. Their accomplishments became his accomplishments, and he found immense joy in sharing every milestone, award, game, and story with anyone willing to listen… even those who didn’t want to listen. He never missed an opportunity to cheer them on. Whether it was a softball game, basketball game, rodeo, school program, or any event they participated in within driving distance, Poppy was there. Rain or shine, hot or cold, if his grandchildren were involved, he was in the stands. His presence was a constant reminder that they were deeply loved and supported. His encouragement, unwavering belief in them, and infectious pride that anyone around could see will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
He was a graduate of Magee High School, He then earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Dairy Science from Mississippi State University in 1970. Larry then began his career with Seale Lily Ice Cream Company, where he developed a lifelong appreciation for making quality ice cream. Even decades later, he remained an expert in his own eyes. He often reminded everyone that the milk fat made all the difference, and if an ice cream didn’t meet his standards, he simply wasn’t going to buy it—or eat it. It became one of the many quirks that made Larry so memorable and loved.
Throughout his career, Larry faithfully served his community in several roles, including the Human Resource Agency, the Simpson County Tax Assessor/Collector’s Office, and the MS State Tax Commission. He retired in 2009 after a long battle with liver failure that forced him to step away from his work. In 2010, Larry received the life-changing gift of a liver transplant. During that difficult season, he experienced the incredible support of his church family, friends, and community—kindness that remained close to his heart for the rest of his life.
A man of deep Christian faith, Larry faithfully served his church community for many years. He was honored to serve as the Clerk for the Simpson County Baptist Association, and as a deacon at Kennedy Springs Baptist Church. A role that reflected his dedication to serving the Lord and others.
Larry found joy in the simple things in life. He took great pride in keeping a perfectly manicured yard—so much so that his family jokingly referred to him as a “professional grass cutter.” Another interesting trait was his love of spreadsheets. He would make a spread sheet for anything and everything. One of his favorite pastimes was riding around on the golf cart with Gammie and his faithful canine companion, Harley. Harley was lovingly named after the Harley-Davidson motorcycle Larry had always dreamed of owning, but Gammie would never allow.
Larry will be remembered for his steadfast faith, his heart, his warm smile, his sense of humor, his opinions about what made good ice cream, and his unconditional love for the people who meant the most to him. His legacy is one of quiet strength, unwavering devotion, and a life lived in faithful service to God, his family, and his community.
Although our hearts are broken by his passing, we rejoice knowing that Larry has been made whole in the presence of his Savior. The lessons he taught, the love he gave, and the memories he created will continue to live on through every member of his family.
Until we meet again, Poppy, thank you for showing us what unwavering faith, church servitude, selfless love, and true devotion to family looks like. Your love will forever be woven into our lives, and your memory will continue to guide us. We will carry your stories, your laughter, and your example in our hearts always. You were deeply loved, and you will be deeply missed. The greatest gift you gave us wasn’t what you accomplished, but how deeply you loved. And that love will remain with us forever.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at Kennedy Springs Baptist Church from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Services will be on Monday, August 3, at 10:00 AM at Kennedy Springs Baptist Church with interment following in the church cemetery.
