Today, McNair Springs is the center of a park built by the City of Magee.

Although no longer supplying drinking water to the Sanatorium or Magee, the spring still produces approximately 400 gallons of clear spring water per minute. (Historical Marker Project.com)

McNair Springs and its associated waterways are central to the history of Magee. The beginnings of Magee date to 1840, when Willie Magee built his gristmill on Little Goodwater Creek. Early in the 1900s, the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad built a fine hotel at the springs, equipped with its own water works and spring-fed pools. In addition, a bottled water manufacturing plant was built around the same time. When the Sanatorium was built, McNair Springs supplied it, as well as the town of Magee, with drinking water.

McNair Springs is located approximately one-half mile from U. S. Highway 49 South off Siloam Road within the city limits of Magee.

(Message from Sue:  The park is beautiful…but a mess.  We must keep this beautiful natural beauty in the City of Magee clean)

I totally agree with not just cleaning, but restoring the park. My granddaughters and I love to picnic at the park. It is refreshing just to sit on the steps and stick your feet in the water. In the beginning when it had play equipment and good picnic tables, my boys, as they were growing up, really enjoyed the area. With years and much abuse, a beautiful site became just a memory. When I questioned why it couldn’t be restored, my answers were always, “We don’t have the man powers to monitor.” Such a shame. I’ve not witnessed the liter being that bad, as of this past summer. The need is in restroom cleanup, and restoring some of the wood on picnic tables. The debri crossing over the springs needed to be removed allowing the water to flow freely.
I truly wish caring could be rubbed off on people, but that won’t happen. It will always have to be restored and maintained, but McNair Springs, along with the City Park are so well worth it. Thanks to all those initiating the clean-up effort.

So glad to see people interested in keeping our areas clean, I like to take my grandchildren there on nice days. I used to like to just go on my lunch break sometimes and just sit and enjoy nature. Maybe I will again when the weather warms.
