Charles Ray Smith passed away on June 24, 2022, at the age of 91. He was born on August 10, 1930, to Earl and Bea Jones Smith.
He retired from the United States Air Force as a Master Sergeant. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, Homestead, Florida, and Grand Forks, North Dakota. Once he even worked in a flashlight company in Japan.
He and his wife, Irene Brock Smith were married for sixty-two years. They were affectionately known as Papaw and Mamaw by those most precious to them.
He loved being in the outdoors fishing, making stained glass, and traveling with Irene, some of which were amateur storm chasing. He was always joking around and having a fun time. He enjoyed playing Canasta, eating anything with peanut butter in it, and spending time with family. He was a jack of all trades who could fix almost anything.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Bea Smith; his wife, Irene Smith; sister, Betty Lou Schwerin and brothers-in-law, Wayne Schwerin and Philip Nelson.
He is survived by children, Kenneth Smith (Dinah), and Ginger Lowry (John); grandchildren, Owen Smith, (Erin), Matthew Smith (Dana), Wendy Bairfield (Justin), and Marianne Smith; great-grandchildren, Clara Smith, Lincoln Smith, Cora Kirk, Elsa Lynn Kirk, Hunter Bairfield, Katie Bairfield, Walker Bairfield, Kylie Rae Barfield, and Peyton Bairfield; sister, Jan Nelson; nephew, Christopher Schwerin (Michelle) and niece, Michelle Sothers (Russell).
The service will be held at 4:00 pm on Monday, June 27, 2022, at Tutor Funeral Home in Mendenhall, MS with visitation from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm. Interment will follow in D’Lo Cemetery with Bro. James Smith officiating.
Arrangements were entrusted with Tutor Funeral Home of Mendenhall.
