Darius Carter of Harrisville, a recent Copiah-Lincoln Community College graduate, was awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the Mississippi Nurses Foundation. The Mississippi Nurses Foundation provides scholarships, stipends and grants to nursing students and registered nurses throughout the state of Mississippi who are pursuing degrees in nursing. Carter will begin nursing school at the University of Southern Mississippi’s Long Beach campus in August.
Despite his success, Carter admits there were challenges.
“Before Co-Lin, my grades were less than average and I had no motivation to succeed at all. I was working at a Burger King and saved the small checks I earned to pay for the first semester of classes at Co-Lin,” said Carter. “The rest is history.”
Carter gives credit for his success to the example set by Co-Lin faculty and staff.
“At Co-Lin, I re-discovered my desire to succeed and learn. The example set by the administration and staff gave me the drive to be the best I can in all aspects of my life,” said Carter. “Co-Lin has changed my life completely and I couldn’t be more thankful.”
While at Co-Lin, Carter was a member of the Blue Wave Show Band, Choir, Concert Band, and Jazz Band. He served as president of Wolfpack Strong Health and Wellness Initiative and was named Mr. Co-Lin.
