Co-Lin’s Workforce Education Division honors area businesses and industries
WESSON – The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Workforce Education Division recognized three businesses and industries for their service and partnership at the annual Business and Industry Appreciation Luncheon held Thursday at The Thames Center on the college’s Wesson Campus. The Career, Technical and Workforce Education division annually honors businesses or organizations that have provided exceptional support for Co-Lin students.
This year, the President’s Award, was presented to Rex Lumber Company in Brookhaven. Doug Boykin, Tom Myers and many others at Rex Lumber, have donated time and effort to both Career-Tech and Workforce Education. For Career-Tech, they have visited and toured our Wesson campus to see what programs are offered, theyhave provided tours of the mill to our Career-Tech instructors so that our instructors may better understand their needs. They host internships for our Career-Tech students, are currently working on an employability project for certain programs on how to complete job applications and interviews, and assisted Career-Tech with a video project on the importance of a partnership among industry and education.
Rex Lumber has utilized our Workforce Division and its instructors to train their employees on various training topics including safety, forklift and CPR. Seeing a need for individuals to be trained as millwrights, Rex Lumber brought together a group to begin talks of Co-Lin offering a millwright program. They have donated countless hours and expertise to get this program started. Rex Lumber continues to advise, listen and partner with both Career-Tech and Workforce for the betterment of our area workforce.
Special Recognition Award was presented to Rogel Ford in Crystal Springs for their support of Co-Lin’s Automotive Technology program. Rogel Ford has donated two vehicles in the past and are in the process of providing four more vehicles that provide much needed hands-on experience for our students. They also hope toprovide a scholarship in the future. Greg Smith is Rogel Ford’s Service Manager and he serves on the Automotive Craft Advisory Committee. The owner, Carl Rogel, is known for being a community supporter and both gentlemen strongly support our Automotive Technology Program.
Also receiving a Special Recognition Award was Pioneer Health Services of Magee. Pioneer Health Services, owned by Joe McNulty, has worked with Co-Lin’s Workforce Education Division since 2008. Their workforce project has covered their in-house training, online training and Co-Lin provided training. Three years ago, they approached us about customizing a Medical Billing and Claims Program for the Simpson County area. Through countless meetings, pouring through curriculum, identifying needed skills and the donation of their employee’s time and efforts, the Medical Billing and Claims Program came into existence. It is a semester long program that provides individuals with medical billing and claims knowledge as well as Excel skills so that they may work in any number of healthcare billing and claims offices. Pioneer Health also hires individuals from this program upon their successful completion. This program would not have been possible without the vision and partnership of Pioneer Health Services.
For well over a decade, Georgia-Pacific has provided their Catfish Cooking Team to prepare a delicious catfish meal at our Business-Industry Appreciation Luncheon.
