Dear Citizens of Magee,
We want to share some important tips to help you avoid becoming a victim of crime. By simply locking your vehicles and ensuring no valuables are left in plain sight, you can significantly reduce the risk of theft. Most criminals are unlikely to break a window unless they see something valuable inside. Taking these precautions can go a long way in protecting yourself and your property. By not facilitating to your victimization you are less likely to become a victim.
We also want to express our gratitude to those who shared video surveillance of the recent burglaries last week. Your assistance was instrumental in helping our officers and investigators gather critical information, including suspect names and other key details. However, we kindly ask that in the future, you allow us time to do our jobs before posting these videos publicly. While sharing videos is your right, posting too soon can alert suspects, potentially jeopardizing the case and hindering apprehension efforts. In the recent case, suspects fled before we could act on reliable information because they were alerted by circulating videos.
Our team is working tirelessly to solve this crime, and we will continue our efforts until justice is served. While the process can sometimes take time, rest assured that we remain committed to holding those responsible accountable.
Additionally, we want to address comments about using firearms against individuals breaking into vehicles. Let us be clear: shooting someone solely for stealing will result in serious legal consequences, including prison. The use of deadly force is only justified when your life or the lives of others are in immediate danger (imminent). Theft alone does not constitute a justifiable reason to shoot at someone.
To better understand your rights and responsibilities regarding self defense, we encourage you to attend an enhanced concealed carry class with a state certified firearms instructor. These classes can help dispel common misconceptions and keep you informed, potentially saving you from legal troubles that many across the nation have experienced. The statement “I didn’t know” will not suffice in court if you shot and or take a person’s life without justifiable reasons.
Thank you for your cooperation and support as we work together to keep Magee safe.
Sincerely,
Chief Denis J. Borges
