MCCOMB, MISS.—Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) crews are continuing cleanup efforts this morning after severe storms overnight brought down trees and power lines, resulting in several road closures. Emergency management officials and utility crews are actively responding throughout southwest Mississippi as multiple highways remain closed due to dangerous conditions and cleanup efforts.

Although I-55 between Brookhaven and Bogue Chitto is open, drivers should anticipate temporary shoulder or lane closures as crews work to push remaining debris from the roadway. Slow down and be on high alert for maintenance crews along these portions of I-55 as remaining debris is cleared.

Active closures include:

  • U.S. 51 between U.S. 84 and Monticello St. in Lincoln County is BLOCKED due to downed power lines and debris.
  • State Route 184 between U.S. 84 and State Route 43 in Lawrence County is BLOCKED due to fallen utility lines across the roadway.
  • Portions of State Route 583 at Douglas Trail in Lincoln County remain BLOCKED as crews work to remove storm debris and restore safe passage.

The public should avoid travel in these areas unless necessary and allow space for emergency responders, MDOT maintenance forces and utility crews to continue cleanup and restoration operations.

Drivers who must travel should:

  • Never drive around barricades or through closed roadways.
  • Treat all downed power lines as energized and dangerous.
  • Use extreme caution when traveling, especially in areas with traffic signal outages or debris near roadways.
  • Slow down and be on high alert for MDOT and other emergency response crews working to clear roadways of debris.
  • Monitor local weather and traffic alerts for additional closures and updates.
