Mississippi State fans made history Saturday night as 41,819 cowbells rang simultaneously, setting a new world record. More than 50 trained volunteers helped with the official count as Bulldog fans joined together for a sound that could only come from Starkville.
And the football game gave those cowbells plenty of reasons to keep ringing.
No. 24 Mississippi State defeated No. 19 Missouri, 31-24, in a back-and-forth SEC thriller that wasn’t decided until the final play of the game. The victory moved the Bulldogs to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in SEC play.
State jumped out to a 14-0 lead before Missouri fought back, eventually taking a 24-17 advantage in the third quarter. But the Bulldogs weren’t finished.
Mississippi State tied the game at 24 on a four-yard touchdown run by Fluff Bothwell. Then quarterback Kamario Taylor connected with Sanfrisco Magee on a 24-yard touchdown pass with 3:57 remaining, giving the Bulldogs the 31-24 lead.
Missouri still had a chance.
On the final play of the night, the Tigers lined up at the Mississippi State 38-yard line and sent a Hail Mary toward the end zone. State cornerback Kelley Jones broke up the pass, ending the threat — and sending Davis Wade Stadium into celebration.
Taylor finished the night with 360 passing yards and three touchdowns, while Bothwell rushed for 122 yards and added 55 yards receiving. Anthony Evans III caught eight passes for 114 yards.
There was another Bulldog record tucked into the night as well. Senior kicker Kyle Ferrie became Mississippi State’s all-time leader in career field goals, extra points and total points.
But perhaps the number everyone will remember is 41,819.
That’s how many cowbells rang together inside Davis Wade Stadium, officially setting a world record and celebrating a tradition that has been part of Mississippi State for generations.
A world record.
A Top-25 SEC victory.
An undefeated 4-0 start.
And a game that came down to the very last play.
That’s a pretty good night to be a Bulldog.
And those cowbells have probably never sounded better.
