National recognition shines spotlight on Hattiesburg’s monthlong arts celebration June 4–27
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — FestivalSouth, Mississippi’s premier multi-disciplinary arts festival, has earned national recognition from Forbes, which recently named the event among the nation’s most underrated music festivals in its feature, “Put These Underrated Music Festivals On Your Radar.” The distinction places Hattiesburg’s hometown festival alongside notable arts destinations across the country while highlighting the exceptional cultural experiences taking place right here in the Pine Belt.
Now entering its seventeenth season, FestivalSouth returns June 4–27, 2026, with more than 50 performances, exhibits, family events and community celebrations spanning music, theatre, dance, visual art and literary programming. This year’s festival also joins communities across the nation in commemorating America’s 250th birthday through a season filled with patriotic themes, artistic reflection and vibrant celebration.
While visitors travel from throughout the region to experience FestivalSouth, organizers say the Forbes recognition serves as a reminder that local residents have access to one of the South’s most remarkable cultural experiences without ever leaving town.
“Sometimes the most extraordinary experiences are the ones in our own backyard,” said FestivalSouth Artistic Director Dr. Mike Lopinto. “Being recognized by Forbes validates what audiences throughout Mississippi have known for years: FestivalSouth delivers nationally competitive artistic experiences while remaining accessible, welcoming and affordable for families and patrons throughout our community.”
FestivalSouth was created to break down social, cultural and economic barriers through the arts, and that mission remains central to the festival today. Programming ranges from Broadway-style productions and internationally acclaimed guest artists to free family events, visual art exhibitions, educational experiences and performances featuring many of Mississippi’s leading musicians and performers.
Among the highlights of the 2026 season are Disney’s Newsies, presented by Hancock Whitney and featuring the award-winning Hub City Players, along with Stars & Steps Forever!, a dynamic dance celebration bringing together international ballet artists and regional performers for FestivalSouth’s grand finale at the Historic Hattiesburg Saenger Theater.
For local residents, FestivalSouth offers a rare opportunity to enjoy a month of high-quality arts entertainment at a fraction of the cost often associated with major destination festivals.
