Be aware that Simpson County School District’s “Policy MO,” regarding the District’s relationship with home-schoolers is not compliant with state law. Two times in “Policy MO” the term “approved” home school program is used. There is nothing in the governing statute, 37-13-91 (attached) that gives the State Board of Education, the local school district, nor any other department of the State of Mississippi any authority to approve your home-school program (Policy MO attached).
On April 14, 2026 Simpson County School District received a letter from Home School Legal Defense Association notifying us that our policy is non-compliant with state law and advised us to amend our policy to bring us into compliance. I quote from that letter: “nothing in [Statute 37-13-91] (or indeed any statute) grants the State Department of Education or local districts the authority to approve home school programs .” (The full letter from HSLDA is attached.)
I have tried several times to get the Board to correct this extralegal language, including twice offering a motion from the floor, but so far to no avail. Please be assured I will continue to advocate for this extra-legal policy to be amended and I will, by God’s grace continue to labour for parental rights, whether public, private, Christian, or home school parents.
In the meantime, do not be intimidated by anyone in Simpson County School District nor by anyone else claiming any authority to approve your home school program. Remember, “eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.”
Sincerely Yours for Liberty,
Thomas Ray Floyd/ District Three School Board Representative
