This is diabetes.
This is one month of diabetes.
It’s demanding. It’s exhausting. It’s almost constant monitoring. It’s unpredictable. It’s blood stains on your clothes. It’s needles – a lot of needles – pump changes, CGM changes, insulin injections, finger pricks. It’s hours of time spent on the phone dealing with doctors and insurance companies. It’s worrying if you will be able to afford your supplies. It’s frequent doctors visits. It’s worrying about the possibility of complications later in late. It’s interruptions to your daily life. It’s navigating stereotypes and misconceptions. It’s always thinking about food – what we have eaten, what we will eat, how many carbs, how much protein, how much fat, etc. It’s lack of sleep and a lack of control. It’s not knowing if the next insulin dose will kill you. It’s bruises and scars on your body.
It’s not a couple finger pricks here or a couple shots of insulin there. It’s not eating too much sugar. It’s not avoiding carbs at all costs. It’s not cute. It’s not easy. It’s most certainly not the punch line of any jokes. It is so much more than that.
To all my friends with diabetes or love someone with diabetes, I see you. I am proud of you. What we do isn’t easy, but you get up everyday and do the damn thing so keep on going. (copied Mary type1)
My 16 year old grandson was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 6 years old. I knew very little about diabetes…and nothing about type 1.
Preston was sick with a virus. Diabetes attacked his body through the virus. We almost lost our precious boy…he has walked through many a difficult road. But, through research and gains in treatment, Preston lives a full life participating in all types of sports and other activities.
Diabetes is a daily walk…you “don’t get well”…you “don’t get over it”…you walk this path for your life. We hope one day there will be an artificial pancreas —it’s in the works!
Remember all today who suffer with any type diabetes. Diabetes is a life changer.
But we’ve still got our precious Preston.
