Wolves sweep Tigers in Booneville

BOONEVILLE – If you’ve seen the 2015 edition of the Copiah-Lincoln baseball team in action this season then you know there is one area in which the Wolves excel. They can hit the baseball. Never has that been more evident than on Thursday when Co-Lin posted a combined 31 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Northeast in Booneville. In game one the Wolves got four runs in the top of the ninth inning to take an 18-17 win over the Tigers. In game two the Wolves built an early six run lead and held off Northeast for a 7-5 win.

Co-Lin 18, Northeast 17
Like grand slams? This game was for you. In the top of the ninth, with Northeast leading 17-13, Co-Lin sophomore Choc Hubbard hit a grand slam that gave the Wolves their final lead. Hubbard had previously hit a two-run homer in the third inning. Hubbard, a sophomore from Mendenhall, finished 6-6 with eight RBIs. In the fourth inning it was sophomore outfielder Adrian Brown who hit the first grand slam of the game, this one gave Co-Lin an 8-2 lead. Brown, a McComb High School alum, went 4-4 and scored five runs in the game.
Co-Lin scored two runs in the first inning, two runs in the third, four runs in the fourth, and four runs in the fifth to build a 12-5 lead. It was nearly all for naught though as the Tigers scored 11 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. That’s right, 11 runs. Co-Lin began the half inning with a 12-5 lead and ended it in a 16-12 hole. Co-Lin outhit Northeast 21-18 and both teams committed three errors apiece in the game.
Jordan Antley and Reed Taylor had two hits apiece for Co-Lin. Antley doubled and scored three runs. Jeremy Moore and Austin Resser (one double) had three hits apiece for the Wolves. Wesley Watts also hit safely for Co-Lin.
Antley picked up the win in relief after moving to the mound from shortstop. He tossed 3.2 innings and gave up five runs (four earned) on nine hits.colineaster

Co-Lin 7, Northeast 5
Game two didn’t feature the level of fireworks of the opener, but it did see Co-Lin still hit the ball at a steady clip. Reed Taylor, Austin Resser, and Adrian Brown all hit a double apiece for the Wolves. Jeremy Moore hit a triple and finished 2-4 with two RBIs. Bailey Warren, Taylor, Brown, and Resser all had an RBI apiece for Co-Lin.
The Wolves did their damage in the fourth inning when they plated six runs to take a 7-1 lead. Northeast picked up four runs in the fifth and one in the seventh. Northeast had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Miles Thomas got Hayden Cummings to hit a line drive to the shortstop and end the game.
Thomas, who was strong on the mound for a second straight game, picked up his first career save after giving up one unearned run on one hit in 2.0 innings. Freshman Cole Langdon gained the win after giving up four runs (one earned) on eight hits in 4.2 innings. Co-Lin committed two errors, as did Northeast. Co-Lin outhit Northeast 10-9.
Co-Lin (11-17, 4-10 Division) next plays on Wednesday, April 8 in Raymond against the Hinds Eagles. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. An audio broadcast of the game can be heard on colinathletics.com and WMJU 104.3 FM in Brookhaven.
