“What can I do about maskne (mask acne)?”

This is a VERY common question I’m getting these days…

After all, when you wear a mask all day, it can trap sweat & dead skin cells on your skin surface, where acne-causing bacteria can breed (even if you’ve never had acne before).

Now before I go on, I have to say: I absolutely recommend wearing a mask in public right now, especially in “hot spot” parts of the country. Pimples & blackheads are MUCH easier to treat than COVID-19 (to put it lightly!).

That said, here are a few tips for keeping your skin fresh & healthy while using a mask:

*Keep your mask clean. If you use a cloth mask, wash it regularly. If you’re using disposable masks, wear a fresh one every day (if you can).

*Avoid wearing makeup underneath. If no one is seeing the area around your mouth & nose anyway, those makeup particles only serve to clog pores.

*Wash your face as soon as you get home. Don’t wait until bedtime… otherwise, you’re allowing several hours of extra bacteria growth.

*Exfoliate regularly. Dead skin buildup will clog pores just as much as bacteria growth. Make sure you’re getting rid of that dead skin 2-3x a week by using your favorite exfoliant.

Of course, if your “maskne” becomes worse than the tips above can handle, consult with a dermatologist. Many are doing virtual consultations, and can give you the best, most up-to-date advice for your unique case.
