Zoe Welch of Simpson Academy is the recipient of the Dr. Robert Bennie Channell Scholarship presented by the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Foundation. The scholarship was established by a gift from the estate of Dr. Channell, a resident of Hazlehurst, who died in 2001. He was a 1943 graduate of Co-Lin and taught at Mississippi State, Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Laboratory and Vanderbilt University. He was a well-known lecturer and speaker and served as director of Harvard University Herbarium. He was a botanist and a specialist on the plant trillium, one species of which bears his name. The scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in one of the sciences. Scholarship recipients and donors were recently honored during the Co-Lin Foundation’s 16th annual scholarship reception held at The Thames Center on the Wesson Campus. The Co-Lin Foundation provides approximately $275,000 in scholarships to more than 200 Co-Lin students annually.
