Magee Elementary School is just a few weeks from being completed.
A very beautiful and safe school will be in place for August ’17 when school begins.
After touring the school all I can say is “WOW!”
As one enters the center and main entrance of the school, a parent center is first in view. Two doors are located on each side of the main entrance and no one will be allowed past this point without a card scan. This security measure is put into play for the children and faculty’s safety.
One wing will house the Kindergarten – second grade. The other wing will house third and fourth grade. Each wing has a storm shelter.
The floors located inside the shelter area are red and gray. In the event of an emergency, students will be advised to go to the red and gray area. Four classrooms, a hall, and restroom are located in the shelter area.
The Shelter area will shut off with storm-protected doors during a storm. The wing also serves as a safety area from an active shooter. The windows are protected from wind and are bulletproof. In the crazy world we live in today with shooting at many different schools, Magee is very fortunate to have a state of the art protective area.
The classrooms are spacious with shelving areas for the children’s coats and supplies. The choice of colors was right on! The floors are primary square tiles throughout the building. The colors give a warm happy feeling. The kindergarten rooms have blackboards that are closer to the floor allowing the smaller children to write on the boards. New furniture and desk are scheduled to be installed May 8-13.
The gym is a large open space with basketball goals and a spacious stage. The flooring gives a wood appearance but has a rubber feel.

The cafeteria is a large open area with vaulted ceilings. The primary colors continue into the cafeteria eating area. All new cooking and warming equipment has been installed. The lunch line will have two lines, one on each side.
The building contains numerous safety features.
Each classroom has windows that open-out so children can be evacuated thought windows if necessary. Sprinkler systems and hose values are installed within the building to allow firemen to hook hoses and use sprinkler system water to maintain supply water for attack hose. Firemen can bring in a limited or smaller amount of hose to attack a larger fire if necessary. A security and camera system is installed within the campus. There are other safety features that will connect back to law and fire departments to assure the protection and safety of the students and faculty.
Located on the back side of the building, buses will load and unload in a covered area which protects the children from rain or direct sunlight.
A pavilion, equipped with water fountains, is located on both sides of the playground. Some playground equipment will be sanded, repainted, and transferred from current school to the new school location this summer. Some new playground equipment has been purchased and will be installed.
The project has been a long needed one. A special thanks to the Simpson County School District office, Simpson County School Board Members, City of Magee, Inspectors, Simpson County Supervisors and everyone who had part in the construction and safety of this building. When school begins in August, these children and faculty will have a state of art school to attend and work.
Three lanes of traffic feed into the school; one lane for in/out traffic, one for buses, and one for traffic coming to school. This system will help to keep traffic from backing up on main road.
An open house is scheduled later this summer before schools opens. When Open House details are available, we will post.
