Nurses from across the globe will convene on Oct. 20-21 at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus for the annual King International Nursing Conference. The event will be held at Asbury Hall, home to USM’s College of Nursing.

The conference provides a unique opportunity for USM students and faculty to network with nurses from different corners of the world, while offering the University a chance to lead on an international scale. This marks the first time that USM has hosted the prestigious conference.

Southern Miss CON faculty members Dr. Janie Butts and Dr. Karen Rich will serve as keynote speakers for the conference. Both are experts in nursing theory.

“We look forward to the opportunity to speak on Imogene King’s theory and are excited that Southern Miss Nursing was asked to sponsor and participate in this special international conference,” said Butts. “We believe the conference serves as an important thread to growing our body of knowledge in the discipline of nursing.”

Renowned nursing theorist Imogene King championed the Theory of Goal Attainment – a process that aims to aid nurses in the nurse-patient relationship, helping their patients meet the goals they set for their health. The King International Nursing Group states that its mission is to “improve the quality of care, and to contribute to the science of nursing, through advancement of King’s Conceptual Systems for Nursing. These include the Theory of Goal Attainment, as well as other theoretical formulations derived from the Framework.”

Rich notes that having USM faculty members address the conference as keynote speakers provides an invaluable platform to advance nursing concepts and best practices.

“It is an honor to participate in the conference as a keynote speaker. Nursing theory is a foundational aspect of what makes nursing a profession,” said Rich. “Gathering as professional colleagues to discuss theories, such as Dr. King’s, keeps theory at the forefront of nursing practice.”
