lemonadeSix year old Tyler Nicholson from Mount Olive sells lemonade at his stand each year in support of his grandfather, Dwight Easterling, a cancer survivor. This year will mark his fifth year in hosting his stand against cancer. Proceeds from his lemonade sales are donated to the American Cancer Society in honor of his grandfather. In the past four years he has raised over $3000.00 to help find a cure.

This year Tyler will be selling lemonade in front of City Hall on Main Street in Mount Olive from 3:00pm until 6:00pm on July 24. Again the proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society in his grandfather’s name to do his part in taking a STAND against cancer.

The Story Behind the Stand:

When Tyler was two his Papaw, Dwight Easterling, was diagnosed with cancer. This diagnosis resulted in surgery and numerous radiation treatments. Tyler attended every visit to the treatment center with his Papaw and was a major support system for him as well as others fighting against the disease.  His many hours in the waiting room resulted in several new friendships and fostered a strong growth of compassion at a very young age. He really begin to love all people and yearned to help any way he could.

Rather than letting the sadness of my father’s newfound diagnosis consume us we (Tyler and I) decided to build on his desire to serve and fight back by doing what we could to help find a cure. Tyler lemonade2was and still is quite fond of lemonade so it was his idea to sell his favorite drink in honor of one of his favorite people.

That summer, Tyler’s Stand Against Cancer was born. It started with his t-ball team and has evolved into an annual event. He and his cousins get together every summer in front of Mount Olive City Hall and sell lemonade. He has raised over $3000 during his four years of hosting the stand.

Each year the stand gets a little bigger and as Tyler matures he adds his own special touches. He is now designing his own “lemonade stand” t-shirts as well as wristbands to support the movement. This years t-shirt design and theme is PEACE, LOVE and LEMONADE!

Tyler is a little older and more knowledgeable of what “cancer” means. The stand is important to him as is finding a cure. Just as soon as the first sign of warm weather appears he starts inquiring about his stand and the planning begins.

Each year brings us one cup further to ELIMINATING cancer!
