While visiting with my oldest son this weekend, I learned of a “new” scam that I was unfamiliar.
Dickey was in New Orleans for a business trip. One of the other reps reported that following room service breakfast, she received a phone call from “room service” with questions about her meal and service. The “hotel” asked for verification on the card she had charged room service. The “hotel” knew her room number and what she had ordered etc. After giving the information, the person became suspicious…and sure enough about two hours later $10,000 had been charged on her card for furniture purchased in Las Vegas.
Of course, as the story unfolded, I thought…why would you give this info…but I really could see how this could happen.
The “scammers” are calling the hotel room service saying they are from another major hotel chain and want to do something special for the last two people who ordered room service. Not suspecting anything, the hotel dining room gives the info which plays right into the scammers hands.
The “moral” of this tip: Never give out info!
