TROJANS FALL SHORT AT HAZLEHURST
The Trojans outscored the Indians in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome Hazlehurst in a tough 3A non-conference tilt. Before hitting the highlights I think it is important to remind Trojan fans that this team lost 20 seniors from last year’s squad. The players that wear the Red & Gray for 2015 refuse to use this as excuse, but it is a reminder that this young team is growing and finding its identity.
The Indians took a 22-3 lead into halftime with a combination of big rushing plays and bounces that would go their way. On the Indians second possession they faced a 4th and 1 from the Trojan 26. The Trojans would penetrate into the backfield causing a fumble but Hazlehurst would emerge from the pile and get the first down. The Indians would take advantage of this break and go up 8-0 in the first quarter. The Indians would score two more times in the first half on long runs.
The Trojans had an impressive drive going at the end of the first quarter, but a debatable holding call would cause the drive to stall. In the second quarter, the Trojans drove deep again into Indian territory, but were unable to convert two times when facing short yardage. After being down 16-0, the Trojans did not give up. On the catalyst of a beautiful 35 yard catch by junior receiver, RJ Hopkins, the Trojans would drive to the Indian 3 yard line. Hopkins had 127 yards on 11 receptions on the night. The drive would stall and Caanan Collins connected on a 25 yards field goal to get the Trojans on the board. After being down 22-3, the Trojans would again respond by driving to the Indian 31 yard line. They would stall again and the score remained 22-3 going into the locker room for the half.
The second half would see the Trojans continue to fight but were unable to get over the hump against their opponent. Junior Quarterback, Tyrique McAfee would connect with Hopkins on a score. He was 23-37 for 241 yards for the night. McAfee and Cortez Hubbard would also score rushing touchdowns for the Trojans. Hubbard would be the most effective running back for the Trojans on this night. Rounding out the scoring for the night, Jamal Keyes would score on a two point conversion. The Indians, who won the state title in 2012, have a good team and this would be their night as they prevailed in front of a huge crowd.
The Trojans get to play a home game this Friday night as they host 5A opponent West Jones at 7:00 p.m. Tailgating will begin at 5:30 p.m. The band and cheerleaders are doing a great job supporting their team. Fans, let’s get behind the Trojans and encourage them as never before as they look to knock off the Mustangs.
