Jackson, MS. Today, registration opened for the fourth annual College Savings Mississippi Art Contest. Running January 9 through February 28, 2017, students across Mississippi can compete for over $3600 in Mississippi Affordable College Savings (MACS) scholarships by submitting an original piece of art on the theme, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

“I am excited about the opportunity to engage students in investing in their own futures through this art contest,” said Treasurer Lynn Fitch. “Doing the art work gets them thinking about all the great possibilities ahead in their lives, and saving for college helps them achieve those dreams.”

The contest is open to any Mississippi students from Pre-Kindergarten to 12th Grade, whether in a classroom, through an afterschool program, or by homeschooling. This year, the classroom or teacher with the most entries will win an additional $100 MACS scholarship to be distributed in the manner he or she determines.

“Our goal through College Savings Mississippi is to provide families across this state an affordable way to save for college, and with the average cost of tuition continuing to rise, we hope this scholarship is a step forward in building that foundation,” Treasurer Fitch continued. “Students who are better prepared for their future are helping create a stronger workforce and economy for Mississippi.”

A $529 Mississippi Affordable College Savings (MACS) scholarship will be awarded to the first place contestant in each of the following age categories: Pre-Kindergarten – 2nd Grade, 3rd – 5th Grades, 6th – 8th Grades, and 9th – 12th Grades. A second place prize of a $250 MACS scholarship and third place prize of a $100 MACS scholarship will also be awarded in each age category.
Students in Pre-Kindergarten through 5th Grade are asked to submit their artwork on an entry form found on Treasurer Lynn Fitch’s website. Students in 6th – 12th Grades are asked to submit their original 8.5” x 11” artwork using a medium of their choice.
