Travel Safe on Labor Day with MDOT Travel Resources

Labor Day weekend is known to many as the “last hurrah” of the summer. While making plans with family and friends, remember to keep driving safe a priority on this busy, holiday travel weekend. The Mississippi Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) main goal is to keep the traveling public safe, including monitoring the state’s highways to encourage a safe travel.

Highway travel will increase on Labor Day weekend. People from all over the United States will be traveling for the final summer event of the year. These are some guaranteed ways for a safe trip to your holiday destination.

Slow down; it will cost you! Always avoid speeding, especially through designated work zones.
Somebody needs you; Buckle Up! Guarantee a safer trip by fastening your seatbelt.
Nobody wins if you drink and drive! If you plan on drinking, also plan on having a designated driver to ensure everyone’s safety.
Share the Rules and the Road! Watch out for motorcyclists, bicyclists, pedestrians, children and animals.
“Safety is a top priority,” said Melinda McGrath, MDOT executive director. “There are ways to ensure travel safety yourself, and MDOT has resources to make traveling safer and easier. MDOT offers free travel media properties – MDOTtraffic.com, MDOT Traffic app and Mississippi 511 – all for your convenience over the holiday weekend.”

Through traffic cameras, congestion analysis technology, radar and temperature sensors, along with local agency communication, MDOT is able to notify the public of concerns that may impact their route while traveling to reach their destination for Labor Day. These are important avenues of communication that can help to arrive safely.

MDOTtraffic.com not only provides the latest travel and traffic conditions, but also shows rest areas and welcome centers across the state. MDOTtraffic.com can be used to avoid construction zones and traffic delays.

The MDOT Traffic App, which works alongside MDOTtraffic.com, is available free on the App Store and Google Play. The app is perfect to use at rest areas while traveling and offers access to real-time traffic information, cameras across the state and synchronizes with your account on MDOTtraffic.com.

Mississippi 511 can be used to check road conditions and access other helpful travel information. Specific road information is available by simply saying the name of the road, city, county or region. The 511 system even gives travelers the option to report traffic conditions if they have not been reported.

“Over the holiday weekend, stay safe, have fun and make memories,” McGrath said. “Take advantage of the state’s useful travel resources to make your trip safer and more enjoyable.”

Use caution and avoid all distractions while traveling Mississippi highways. Visit MDOTtraffic.com or like and follow @MississippiDOT on Facebook and Twitter for more safe traveling tips.
