If you are looking for an activity for your child this summer, check out the Children’s Museum in Jackson.

My granddaughters, Larkin and Harley, visited “Sue Sue” for a week! My daughter-in-law suggested I meet she and Hudson at the Museum. I had no idea what a fabulous place was only one hour away…and it’s cool!

Until September, the Thomas the Train exhibit is open. My grandson Hudson loves trains…my girls did too. We saw some Simpson County folks checking out the trains and other areas of the museum.

The cost is $10 each and the wristband is good for all day. One can come and go during the day. Wear comfortable shoes. There are places to sit but you do a lot of standing.

I can’t even say which exhibit was my favorite. I loved them all! We all loved Thomas the Train…lots of interaction. I can’t imagine designing an exhibit that is kid friendly! If your kids are like my kids, they are rough on anything!

Not only are the children entertained, they are actually learning skills at each exhibit. I think Hareligh loved the “car” area the best. She “drove and drove” that car! Larkin was determined to operate the crane and move a log! In the music area, the grands got on stage and performed an impromptu song and dance.

We ate lunch at the Red Rocket Cafe located inside the museum.  Larkin had a pizza which she said was delicious and ate every bite.  Harleigh had an “uncrusted” peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  Lynda enjoyed a salad.  I had a wheat chicken wrap.  The food was good but pricey!

No one wanted to leave but Sue! The children enjoyed the splash pad upon exiting the building.

Additional activities are planned for almost every day!

The Mississippi Children’s Museum (MCM) was born in 1994 from the urgent need to improve the health, literacy and well-being of Mississippi’s children. Recognizing a vital need for innovative, creative and engaging educational resources for Mississippi children and their families, and inspired by the success of children’s museums across the country, a visionary group of community volunteers began the extensive process that led to MCM.

Opened in December 2010, this 40,000 square foot museum houses five galleries of educational, interactive exhibits and enriching weekly programs that focus on literacy; health and nutrition; the cultural arts; science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM); and Mississippi heritage.  In 2014, MCM opened a sixth, outdoor, 13,000 square foot gallery, the Literacy Garden, which combines experiential artworks with unique landscape architecture that encourages early language and reading skills development.

Museum Guidelines and Rules:
• ALL children must be accompanied by an adult at all times
• We ask that all adults be accompanied by a child. To truly appreciate all that MCM has to offer, you must experience the most inspirational place imaginable with a child!
• Visitors may leave and return using their wrist bands on the same day of purchase.
• For your safety, shoes must be kept on at all times (except on Run, Jump, Stick).
• Food and beverages are permitted only in the Red Rocket Café.• NO OUTSIDE FOOD OR DRINKS are allowed in the museum.
• Please refrain from loitering, running, or blocking the ramps, walkways, or entryways.
• Abusive and obscene language is prohibited.
• The Mississippi Children’s Museum is a tobacco free campus.
• Weapons are not permitted on Museum property.
• Please be courteous to the visitors around you.

Exhibit Guidelines and Rules:
• Parents are encouraged to play in the exhibits with their children.
• Return all props to their proper place after playing with them.
• Hang all costumes up after playing dress up.
• Remember that no food or drink is allowed in the exhibit areas.
• Please take your artwork home or place it in the provided recycle boxes.
• Be gentle with our museum so we can keep it beautiful for a long time.
