I am blessed with a large circle of family. We live all over the USA but arrange to be in Pelahatchie at the Horn Family Christmas every year.
The tradition began 77 years ago when Linda Dickey Montgomery was the first grandchild of Lace and Bertha Horn. The gathering actually began in the house I now live in (the family home). Through the years, the “Horn” Christmas was held in different locations. Several years ago, the Knox Ross Barn became home to our Christmases.
Lace (L.G.) and Bertha had five children: Mary Ruth Horn Dickey, L. G. (Gebe)Horn , Bertha Jean Horn Ross, Willie Grace Horn Everett, and Paul Caughman Horn. From these five children came the future of our linage. The dedication each member experiences in pushing to get home for Christmas brings our big crowd.
My Aunt Jean Ross is the only living sibling. She is 96 years old and still attends the Horn Christmas.
From young to old, everyone enjoys our get together. Now, there are so many “little” children, I don’t even know all of the names!
Everyone who attended is not in the picture. Several “regulars” were absent. In fact, my sister Linda Montgomery who has attended every Horn Christmas up until this year (would have been #77) was unable to attend due to the flu!
The feeling is amazingly wonderful just to think our blood all runs together!

Your article is excellent about our incredible family gathering. When our grandparents started the tradition so that their five children would be able to plan their Christmas homecoming in advance, I doubt if they had any thought that it would continue for decades . “I’ll be home for Christmas. “ thank you for writing. It is possible that Horn Christmas is a bit older than 77 years, maybe up to 80 or when Gebe started started college/medical school.
Your Magee News article is excellent. Thank you for sharing about our wonderful Horn Christmas tradition. It is possible that the annual gathering has been in our Horn Family a bit longer than 77 years. One reason that it started was to give all five children a date for planning to come home especially about the time that Gebe started college/medical school. Wouldn’t our Horn grandparents love this? “ i’ll be home for Christmas, you can Count on me.”
