Dr Bridges Executive Director of Haven House Family Shelter in Vicksburg appeared before the Simpson County Board of Supervisors at their February 15, 2024.
February is Teen Violence Awareness Month. Dr. Bridges explained that 1 in 12 teens experiences dating violence. 10% of teens living in the US have been victims of dating violence.
Teen dating violence can look a multitude of ways including:
-Physical Violence – bodily harm, hitting, biting, pinching, and shoving
-Emotional Violence – threats, diminishing of self-worth, bullying, purposeful embarrassment
-Sexual Violence – forcing a young person to participate in a sexual act, threatening to spread rumors if they refuse
-Stalking – harassing, repeated uninvited visits, or unwanted consistent electronic communication
If a teen experiences teen dating violence, tell someone, document the abuse, and of course leave the relationship.
The Board of Supervisors passed a proclamation to increase Teen dating violence awareness.
