Students from Magee Elementary Receive “Outstanding” Feedback for Participation in NAEP
Each year the National Assessment of Educational Progress or NAEP is administered to students across the nation in grades 4, 8 and 12 to measure what American students know and can do in various subject areas. NAEP, also known as the Nation’s Report Card, provides important information about student achievement and often results in policy and curriculum changes that aim to increase student performance in key subject areas. This assessment is also a major factor in determining how states rank in education compared to other states.
This year, 62 fourth grade students at Magee Elementary were among those selected to represent Mississippi in this year’s NAEP testing, and according to NAEP representatives, they were impressive! NAEP sends their own team of test administrators, most of whom are retired educators. During a debriefing, Mr. Arnold Harris, the NAEP test coordinator and retired school administrator, told assistant principal Dedra Clark-Allen that the students were “outstanding.” He went on to compliment the condition and cleanliness of the building as well as the behavior of the students, adding, “I wouldn’t mind coming back to work at a place like this, with students like this.” All of the representatives also mentioned how well the students followed directions and how adept they were at manipulating and navigating technology.
The students who participated were randomly selected by NAEP with no input from the school or district. What the NAEP representatives experienced at Magee Elementary School on that day is indicative of what is happening at the school each day. Thanks to support from the community, school board members, school and district administrators, the custodians and others, the students at Magee Elementary have access to a facility and resources that inspire learning every day. This, coupled with high expectations for academic achievement and personal conduct, is why Mr. Harris said, and his team agreed, that he wished that all the schools he visited were like Magee Elementary.
