State Land Transfer to National Park Service Enhances
Vicksburg National Military Park
Vicksburg, Miss.— The State of Mississippi has transferred multiple parcels of property to the National Park Service (Vicksburg National Military Park), enhancing the preservation of the sites and visitors’ experience at this historic landmark.
“This land transfer by the State will help to preserve these historic areas all while expanding the size of the Vicksburg National Military Park to this crucial battle in the Vicksburg Campaign prior to the siege,” stated Secretary Hosemann. “As someone who grew up in the Park, I applaud all of the many citizens, groups and the Park Service who have worked so hard to keep this part of history in the public domain for future generations.”
Pursuant to Miss. Code Ann. § 29-1-1, Secretary Hosemann signed the deeds conveying five (5) parcels in Hinds County, including portions of Champion Hill Battlefield and the Coker House, to the National Park Service, a bureau of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
In 2014, the Mississippi Legislature passed Senate Bill 2486, which authorized the State to donate to the National Park Service (Vicksburg National Military Park) all rights, title and interest in these properties under the possession and control of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
The transfer of the Champion Hill Battlefield is the largest expansion ever of the Vicksburg National Military Park.
