The victim in last night’s tragic incident on Hwy 49 South has been identified as 36 year old Douglas Lee Huffman from Florence, MS. (Next of kin has been notified)
According to the investigation, Mr. Huffman was sitting on the roadway, making it impossible for vehicles to see him in time. Prior to the collision, the 911 Emergency Center received a call about a person walking in the middle of the highway. The call was relayed to county authorities and then dispatched to city officers. While officers were en route, they were informed that Huffman had sat down in the middle of the lane, and shortly afterward, a vehicle collided with him.
The driver initially believed he had struck a deer and continued to the turn-around, where he waited until officers arrived. The investigation has determined that the driver was not under the influence of any substance, and no foul play is suspected. This was unfortunately a tragic accident.
This is a heartbreaking situation for all involved, and our thoughts and prayers are with both Mr. Huffman’s family and the driver during this difficult time.
