Magee Board of Alderman met Tuesday, January 5, 2021 for their regular scheduled meeting.
During the board meeting Mayor Dale Berry read his State of the City Address to the board and ones present.
In the Mayor’s Report, Berry advised he had received calls concerning the State Flag not flying at City Hall. Berry explained Mississippi Flags have been ordered and are expected to arrive hopefully by the end of the week. As soon as the flags are delivered, the flags will be raised.
Berry thanked the Hugh Jack Stubbs Benevolence Fund for the donation of $2800.00 to purchase dog food for the city pound.
Fireman Phillip Magee approached the board about seeking a grant writer to apply for a grant to purchase a new fire engine. The grant writer is paid only if the grant is approved. The grant would be a 95/5 split with the city only responsible for the 5%.
Magee advised there had been 155 fire calls this past year. The calls were down approximately 37 from the year previous. Magee stated less calls were due to the pandemic, people at home and more aware of their surroundings, and fewer grass fires.
The Parks and Recreation Department is beginning to fill spots for 2021 ball tournaments. Tournaments are scheduled for late February and March. March tournaments will bring out- of-state teams which will help with revenue in the hotel sector.
The bathrooms at the tennis courts have been vandalized again. The city will utilized the CAD system showing which officers lock each facility and at what time. The gate at the cemetery will be closed and locked at sunset each day.
Police Chief Randy Crawford ask the board to accept the resignation of John Hosey as an officer. Hosey has a better job opportunity. The board approved to move Candice McGill from full-time dispatcher to part-time dispatcher with the police department.
Superintendent Hugh Dillmore addressed the board and thanked them for the purchase of the excavator. Dillmore would like to see a shed built to cover the equipment parked at the city barn. The board will consider the request during the next budget year.
City workers have been issued new uniforms. Magee Sanitation Department will soon began a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday operation will no Wednesday pickup. Wednesdays will be designated as the day workers pick up trash on sides of roads and work on the city’s appearance.
Dillmore brought to the attention the old fire truck that was one of the first trucks for the City of Magee. The truck is believed to be a 1942. Dillmore will obtain estimates to see what it will cost to restore the truck. If renovated, the truck will be on display in the City of Magee.
With no further business the meeting was recessed until the January 19th meeting.
