Southern Miss School of Music Hosts Musicians from Across South

Each year during February, high school students from throughout the southeastern United States convene on The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus to enjoy an inspiring, music-filled weekend.

The Southern Miss School of Music will host hundreds of students Feb. 5 – 7 during the All-South Honor Band weekend. For many talented students, simply taking part in their own school’s band program is not enough. All-South provides the perfect environment for high school students who crave more knowledge and opportunities to play.

“We have restructured the All-South Honor Band to a concise three days to allow more participation from high school students from around the country,” says Dr. Catherine Rand, director of Bands, “This year’s PRISM Concert showcases the full ensembles, plus the winds, brass and percussion areas of The University of Southern Miss School of Music.”

The clinic boasts students from all southern states and a few from even farther away. Concerts by numerous School of Music ensembles highlight the weekend that culminates in performances by the students of All-South.

This year’s PRISM Concert will be held on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 7:30pm in Bennett Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. A grand showcase performance, featuring the Symphonic Winds and Wind Ensemble and more instrumental music ensembles, the program will conclude with halftime hits from The Pride of Mississippi Marching Band.

Concerts of the All-South Honor Bands will be on Sunday, Feb. 7 beginning at 2 p.m. The guest conductors for this year are internationally renowned composer/conductor Dr. Frank Ticheli; Elizabeth Taylor from Shorter University, Ga; and Steve Rivero from Flanagan High School, Fla.

All concerts are free and open to the public.
