Following much discussion concerning the F rating received at Magee High School and D rating at Mendenhall High School, I decided to talk with two of the “head” people at the district office: Dr. Robert Sanders (Assistant Superintendent/ Human Resources and Secondary Curriculum) and Debbie Davis (Deputy Superintendent).
The video may be lengthly, but well worth the watch. Sanders and Davis opened my eyes to the efforts being made in our county to help our students and teachers. The District Office has a plan for improvement…the challenge is implementing the plan.
The math instructional program followed in 2018 did not work. A new program was begun in August.
The importance of school attendance was discussed. Attendance is an area that parents and students must commit.
Each school follows the same curriculum.
I was under the misconception that we “lost” teachers because of our grade…but that is not the truth. Teacher positions are reduced due to drop in school enrollment. Additional federal funds are available to schools with failing grades.
Going straight to the source is the best way to find the whole truth. As parents and citizens of our county, we must strive to encourage and enforce attendance at school every day.
Tools are available for parents to know daily if their child missed any assignments or grade scores. Seems to me, everything is just a click away.
In my opinion, often too much time is placed on laying blame when the effort should be in finding a solution. Our District Office is working to find solutions…now we must implement the plans.
Several years of failed rating is required before a school is taken over by the state. At this time, this is not a problem for Magee High School. If failing grades are continued in the future, the situation may be different.
Three of our county schools: Magee Elementary, Mendenhall Elementary, and Simpson Central all received a B rating.
Mendenhall Junior High showed the greatest improvement in their scores coming from an F to a D but…they improved 60 points from the precious year!!!
Let us continue to pray for our students, faculty, and parents. It takes a village to educate a child.
