The bi-monthly meeting of the Simpson County Board of Supervisors was called to order by President Danny Craft. Johnny Sykes led in prayer followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. All board members were present.
In the absence of Chancery Clerk Tim Gray, board attorney Danny Welch opened the meeting. Homestead chargebacks for 2024, which were submitted to the MS Department of Revenue, were recorded in the minutes. Mr. Welch noted that Justice Court Judge Brian Kennedy completed the spring Justice Court conference.
Circuit Clerk Whitt Fortenberry reported on the past and upcoming elections and the need for upgraded tablets in the future. An upgrade to the Poll books will cost approximately $63,000. The board approved to move forward on the request.
Election commissioners Diane McPhail, Wanda Bridges, Donna Magee, and Eugene Blair were present to support the request for new tablets. According to Fortenberry, money is available in a fund which was earmarked for election needs. Items requested were granted.
Road manager Jeremy Bolton asked for asset# 1189 (1997 Freightliner Day Cab Truck) and asset #1208 (1997 Aluminum Transfer trailer) declared surplus. Both items will be included in the Jeff Martin Auction May 16th. Estimated cost to repair the guard rail on Old Pearl per State Aid recommendation is $15,084. The asphalt truck has been delayed another two weeks. Pre-level is 70% complete. Bridge approaches are complete on Old Pearl and Hopewell. Additional work will take place on the approach on Hopewell. Two 10-wheel dump trucks are scheduled for delivery next week.
Sheriff Paul Mullins report:
Tax assessor Jamie Brewer was not present.

John Kilpatrick, Emergency management, reported 692 calls. Mapping for the new system is up and running. John commended Charlie Welch for the work he has done with the GIS system. “Charlie’s knowledge made a huge difference in implementing the system,” stated Kilpatrick. John is working on a long-term recovery plan. The county salt dome is perfectly safe with no one being injured in the blow out last week.
Supervisor Wayne Womack requested the county look into a new fire plan and long term forestry plan. CMPD reported cost for upgrading is $5,000. Motion passed.
