The Simpson County Board of Supervisors met Monday, January 22, 2024. All supervisors were in attendance.
Charlie Welch presented an update on the Simpson County Court House explaining the building, following a new roof, is still leaking. Charlie continues to work with the roofers and assured the Board the situation would be rectified. The cost to repair an over twenty years old jail kitchen boiler is $3,758. Charlie explained at this time the turnaround for parts is about 50 days. The Board voted to repair the boiler and purchase additional parts for future repairs. Mr. Welch discussed the IBM maintenance renewal and operating system software. A decision concerning the IBM purchases was tabled.
The Board approved the hiring of Desmond Williams as a driver in the Solid Waste Department.
A request for the Mendenhall’s Miss Hospitality pageant to be held at the Courthouse on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at 2 PM was approved.
A request by Haven House Family Shelter to be placed on the February 15, 2024 board agenda and have Board President Mitchell Chatman sign the Teen Dating Violence Awareness Proclamation. The Board approved the request.
The board approved the payment of 2024 MAS-MC annual membership dues in the amount of $300.00 for Supervisor Mitchell Chatman.
Two quotes were received with Mr. Transmission being the lowest quote in the amount of $5,995 for repair of a 2028 Dodge Ram 3500. The board approved the request.
Approve applicable travel, meals, lodging, registration, and mileage expense for Supervisors and Support staff to attend the MAS 2024 Annual conference to be held June 10-13, 2024 in Biloxi. Board approved.
Five claims for immediate issuance of checks for Wolverton Engineering for engineering fees was approved.
The subject of increased solid waste fees was discussed and tabled for a later decision. The county is 2 ½ million dollars in debt in the Solid Waste department.
John Kilpatrick, emergency operations, explained the need for a mapping system that integrated all systems in the county allowing the use of one map. The board gave permission to Mr. Kilpatrick to pursue a system. “We need to use same map,” stated Kilpatrick.
13,587 911 calls for 2023.
John explained the area fire departments met and worked on a redistricting plan. The change in area within different departments will not affect fire rating.
Tax Assessor /Collector Jamie Brewer and Sheriff Paul Mullins had no report.
Road manager Ben Warren reminded everyone to be aware of the rain that is scheduled for this week. “We managed pretty good during the ice. We had salt on hand and I’ve already order back up salt,” stated Warren.
Melinda Green, local advocate for the poor, appeared before the Board requesting permission to pursue available grant money. The grands available are SNAP grants and are 100% coverage. Permission was granted.
Supervisor Wayne Womack informed the board he intended to use his personal truck for supervisor business. Womack asked that the truck he is assigned be given to Jason Busby, fire coordinator, for the county. The Supervisors approved the request.
