Report from Scott Womack of the Simpson County Sheriff’s Department
The manhunt on Wilson Welch Road on Sunday afternoon, July 30, was over before there was time to tell anyone. There was a call about someone suspicious selling washing detergent. First Deputy on scene noticed the back window broken out of a truck and 2 men moving away from the truck toward a home they were staying in with family. A check of the tag revealed the Ford F350 truck was reported stolen from Carthage, Mississippi. One man was arrested at the house moments later, the other fled out the back door. Deputies called to see if the bloodhound team was available and an off duty employee was called at 6:59 pm, who lived nearby and responded to pick up the bloodhound. The man was tracked about half a mile (880 yards) where he doubled back on his trail a short distance and hid in the empty motor compartment of an old abandoned vehicle near a ravine, with the hood pulled down for concealment. The bloodhound, Montana tracked to the suspect and sat down in front of the vehicle wagging her tail. Suspect was apprehended without incident. We had so many calls for service during this time, that I went to 3 different calls myself. This was Montana’s second apprehension and her first felony apprehension, all on her 10 month birthday. She is an excellent tracker and usually trains at least twice a week. She is silent and runs as fast as her trackers can follow at a full run. She is amazing to watch. As always we try to inform the public as soon as possibly but this apprehension was over very quickly, much like the last one which was a track of about 600 yards in a swampy wooded area. Thanks to Simpson County Sheriff Donald O Cain for his strong support of the K9 team.
