On Feb. 25, eighth graders Kami Patrick and Garnet Gary, from Simpson Central School, participated in the Mississippi History Day Southern Regional Competition at The University of Southern Mississippi. The competition is held annually and is sponsored by the Mississippi Department of History and Archives.

For the competition, Patrick and Gary created an exhibit on Medgar Evers and prepared a process paper and annotated bibliography to accompany it. Both students placed first in their division and will go on to compete at the Mississippi History Day State Competition, which will be held at the Two Mississippi Museums on April 22.

History teacher Abigail Myers, who accompanied the students at the competition, is thrilled her students were given this opportunity to work on their historical research skills and compete with students across the state.

“It was a great experience for them,” said Myers. “We are looking forward to the state competition.”

Patrick and Gary showcase their history exhibit on Medgar Evers, which they received first place during the Mississippi History Day Southern Regional Competition.
