Press Release from Magee Police Department

On September 19, at approximately 0022 Hours, the Magee Police Department received a call stating that a gunshot was fired on 1st Ave in front of the Magee Community House and the caller further stated that someone was shot. Officers arrived on scene and witnesses stated that the shooter had fled the scene after shooting Corey Barnes Jr.

Corey Barnes Jr. was transported by personal vehicle to the Magee Emergency room and shortly thereafter was transported to UMC by helicopter.

At approximately 0335 Hours, Zaccheus McLaurin was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault. The weapon used in the crime was recovered by Investigator Allen Martin and Chief Randy Crawford.

Zachary McLaurin will go before Judge Eugene Knight on Tuesday for an Initial Appearance and bond will be set.
Chief Randy Crawford stated that the preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had fired one round striking the victim in the leg area with a 357 caliber handgun. Chief Randy Crawford stated that this case will be presented to the next available term of the Simpson County Grand Jury.
